There is rising concern among powerbrokers in the Victorian Liberal Party that next year’s state election will interfere with their core mission; infighting among themselves.
Questions are being asked whether they can “sit this one out” while they tear each other apart, or whether they’ll be forced to commit time and effort to an election campaign.
“The strange thing is, it used to be Labor that would try and decimate us,” said a source from the mahogony-lined corridors of Liberal HQ in Collins Street.
“Now we’re managing to do it to ourselves without their help.”
With a shocking result in the 2022 Victorian state election, the Victorian Liberal Party hold just 20 seats out of a possible 88 in the Legislative Assembly.
“Look, that was a terrible result. An absolute embarrassment,” said the Liberal Party source.
“But if we can manage that again next year I think we’d be tickled pink!
“I mean, we could probably win if we gave it a crack. All we’d need to do is fill a few potholes and round up the child criminals. But realistically, we haven’t got the time”.
