The Victorian Crime Statistics Agency have announced a new approach to keeping track of crime in the state.
Instead of the cumbersome and time consuming task of keeping track of the skyrocketing crime, they’ll instead pivot completely, and just report on those that have not been affected by crime.
“It has just become too big a job” said one of the chief statisticians at the VCSA.
“We’ve had to think outside the square, and I think we’ve hit on something that will make our jobs easier into the future, instead of harder.
“Let’s just count those that haven’t been victims of crime. It is a relatively small number, and it is shrinking fast!”
The decision come after statistics show there were 638,640 criminal offences recorded in Victoria in the twelve months to end of June 2025 – an increase of 86,587 offences or 15.7%.
Theft from motor vehicles equated to 86,351 offences (up 39.4% for the year); motor vehicle theft is at 33,018 for the year (up 42.1% for the year); theft from retail stores is at 41,667 offences for the year (up 27.6%).
While children only account for 12.8% of all offenders processed, they are overrepresented in serious and violent crimes such as robberies (62.2%), aggravated burglaries (47.7%), and car theft (26.4%).
